The Gangseo-gu Neighborhood Pesticide Motorcycle (or truck)

I’ve been waiting to post about this until I got some photographic evidence and today I finally was in the right place at the right time with my camera thanks to Dave and his keen ear. We’ve seen a motorcycle drive around our streets a few times spraying a white cloud of mosquito killing pesticide in the air. Every time we’ve seen it we’ve been almost at our apartment and have had to bolt up the stairs to safety. We don’t know what the motorcycle is spraying, but we know it can’t be good. Sprays that kill anything generally aren’t great for you to be exposed to.

Usually the motorcycle goes around the block a few times before moving on to the next one. Today it wasn’t a motorcycle, but a truck. This time we were safely inside the teachers’ room. We saw it go by once and during my next break Dave told me it was coming around again. The rumbling sound can be heard a minute or two before you actually see it. This time I was at the window ready with my camera.

I would like to think that in this day and age, and in a country that prides itself on it’s math and science skills, they aren’t spraying endocrine disrupting chemicals into the air. But how are we to know for sure?

I’ve tried googling this topic and I haven’t gotten very far. I found one mention of the possibility of it being something called Anvil. There isn’t much out there in English about what South Korea sprays to kill the summer pests. I did find a Facebook group on the topic that had translated a few lines of a Korean article on this, but the group has been inactive since 2009, so who knows if anything has changed since then.

The most disturbing thing I found in my research about these vehicles that spray mystery chemicals is that children like to run after the fumes! How can this be?! Haven’t we learned by now not to expose young children to potentially harmful chemicals? I don’t care if you’ve been told that the cloud isn’t that harmful, you should still be a little skeptical. I highly doubt being sprayed with any chemical cloud can be healthy, let alone one that is meant to kill insects. The following video is sad and ridiculous. The pesticide truck might as well be playing the ice cream truck song.

  1. They used a fogger truck like this at the resort I worked at in Thailand. Sometimes the guests would freak out, thinking that the place was on fire from all the fog. I don’t know the story about what was actually in that stuff though 🙁

  2. I too have been waiting to post until I get a decent picture. Unfortunately, I never seem to have my camera with me when the motorcycle passes. One of the first crazy things I noticed about Korea, that pesticide.
